Sociology
Curriculum Aims
Sociology is the scientific study of society, which enables us to understand its structure and dynamics. It looks at the relationship between institutions of power and the people, as well as the values, norms and customs of society. Sociology explores the workings of society, as well as theories and methods used to try to understand and explain it.
Anyone who is interested in the workings of society and the government’s attitude towards this would benefit from studying sociology. It encourages students to think critically about the world around them and will enable them to break free from the hegemony. The subject builds up students skills in communicating opinions effectively, whilst teaching them the discipline to support conclusions with detailed, reasoned evidence. It also enables students to understand the processes, thought and ethics that goes into research, empowering them with the tools to carry out their own research.
