Philosophy, Religion and Ethics
Students in Years 7-11 study Philosophy, Religion and Ethics. They have an 80 minute lesson once a fortnight. The programme that we have created allows a wide-reaching and inclusive dialogue concerning philosophy, religion and ethics.
Students are taught about religious and non-religious views. Lessons are focused on building students knowledge, understanding and respect for other people’s beliefs. Students are also provided with opportunities to learn about philosophical views and debate these.
As part of the programme students also explore ethical issues and the religious debates that surround them. Lessons also provide opportunities to explore and and develop British Values:
- Democracy
- Individaul Liberty
- Rule of Law
- Mutual Respect
- Toleration of different faiths and beliefs
Through curriculum days, the tutor programme or PSHE lessons and by linking to other curriculum areas such as Beliefs & Vaes and Philosophy, Religion and Ethics. Students are made aware of different religions, faiths, cultures as well as humanist perspectives.
Religious Education is a compulsory part of the school curriculum. Parents have the right to withdraw their children for all or part of the lessons. Parents should contact school in the first instance to discuss any such requests.
